Why can't I preprogrammed my radio in my 1995 vipe...

Why can't I preprogrammed my radio in my 1995 viper ? What am I doing wrong? I hold in the number till the boxes stop flashing but the program does not retain the memory once I get off that channel Please help! Thanks Joe
