someone stole the face plate to my vir7840nrbt i c...

someone stole the face plate to my vir7840nrbt i couldn't afford to replace it so i bipassed it by placing a small piece of metal on the two contact points that are under the plate and it worked but now for some reason the unit will turn on but immiatialy turns off what can the problem be
