job of protecting y our speaker(s)if they must be transported.
SAFE LIMITS OF OPERATION
Polk Audio specifies therecommended amplification range
for each of i ts passive(non-amplified) loudspeakers. Typically
that specification will b e e xpressed asa range of power such
as 20-200 W ( per c hannel).It is important to understand
what those numbers meanwhen choosing a receiver or
amplifier for your Polkloudspeakers. The lower number
indicates the lowest continuousrated power that will yield
acceptable performance in atypical listening environment.
The higher number indicatesthe highest per channel power
that should be usedwith your Polk speakers. That n umber
should not be c onfused witha “Power Handling” specification
and it does notimply that the speaker willsafely handle
that full amount o f poweron a long-term basis. We specify
a wide range o f powerratings because not all electronics
manufacturers use the samemethod for rating power.
In fact, high q uality lower-ratedamplifiers sound better and
play louder than lowquality units with a higherpower rating.
Automobile horsepower is agood analogy. Your car probably
has far more h orsepower thanit needs for your dailycommute
and is likely capableof going well over 120mph(190km/hr).
Having that extra poweris good for on-ramp acceleration
and danger avoidance (likegetting away from brain-eating
zombies) but that doesn’tmean that it is advisable tooperate
your car on NorthAmerican highways at full power and
maximum speed for anextended period of time. Just ask
your local state trooperif you are in doubt. Similarly,we
recommend using amplifiers andreceivers with rated power
above the Power H andling limitsof our speakers because
having extra power availablefor short term peaks is conducive
to better sound quality, maximum dynamic range and effortless
high volume output. B ut westrongly urge you not to usethe
full power of youramplifier or receiver for daily listening.
Loudspeakers can be d amaged whenan amplifier, regardless
of its wattage, i s m ade t o playat higher listening levels thanits
power can clearly produce.Operation at this level can resultin
very high levels ofaudible distortion originating in the
amplifier, which can a dd aharsh, gritty sound to your listening
material. If you hear distortion—turnthe volume down
or risk damaging your speakers. You can damage just
about any speaker, r egardless ofpower rating, if you drive an
amplifier to or b eyond thepoint of distortion.
